Rocky Mountain High School’s school newspaper, the RM Highlighter, was recently awarded the prestigious Pacemaker award from the National Scholastic Press Association.
Touted as the Pulitzer of high school journalism, this award is given to the top 27 high school newspapers in the nation. This is the second time the RM Highlighter has won this award. The previous award was in 2006. It was a Pacemaker finalist in 2007 and 2009.
The 2010 Pacemaker award marks the first time the RM Highlighter has won 1st place in the Colorado High School Press Association state sweepstakes competition and the Pacemaker in the same year. The newspaper was 2nd in the sweepstakes in 2006.
Seven RMHS students attended the fall national high school journalism convention in Kansas City attended by 4,500 students. In addition to the Pacemaker honor, three students took home write-off competition awards at the convention: Charlie Anderson (Review Writing), Chloe Evans (Yearbook Copy/Captions-Student Life) and Calvin Jouard (Sports Writing).
