Schools Readying for Grade Changes

PSD Schools finalizing plans for2009 Grade Level Changes

Poudre School District schools have held parent and student information meetings and are carrying out plans in preparation for students’ smooth transition to new grade levels in August 2009.

Excitement is building as PSD moves forward with plans to move to Kindergarten-grade 5 elementary schools, grade 6-8 middle schools, and grade 9-12 high schools in fall 2009.  PSD began planning for the transition in June 2007.

Following are links to parent information timelines and readiness plans for each school.  You will find your child's school(s) in one of the 4 "feeder systems" for the high school that serves as your neighborhood school, or under option/referral schools below.

Goals for changing grade levels are to increase academic and extra-curricular opportunities for students, improve curriculum alignment, and help students transition between all levels.

PSD grade level changes will help accomplish the following objectives:

§     Encourage more students to complete Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and dual enrollment college classes,

§     Better prepare students for post-secondary challenges and options,

§     Assure more students complete high school,

§     Design graduation requirements that present students with additional pathways, and

§     Potentially create more early childhood education opportunities.

Readiness plans receive final review

Principals, counselors and teachers are leading the planning process for their schools, finalizing site readiness plans that address academics, curriculum, extra-curricular activities, successful transitions for 9th graders, class schedules, athletics, communication with parents and students, safety, and professional development for staff.  Schools drafted and submitted plans in April, and plans were finalized in November.  Schools and principals will continue to keep their communities informed through all means possible and continue to welcome input.

Course catalogs going online

PSD is developing online course catalog and curriculum pathway tools to make access to course listings easier for students and parents, and to make the system easier for teachers and counselors to use for registration.  The electronic catalog will be synchronized with PSD’s student information system.  Course registration materials also will be distributed in print format.

Schools met with a nationally-recognized school schedule expert to learn ways to create the most effective class schedules for students in elementary, middle and high schools.  School-wide course schedules are currently at the conceptual stage.  Last fall, schools finalized and shared course schedules for the 2009-10 school year.

School Choice deadline moved up for Secondary Schools

To make the planning and registration process smoother, PSD has moved the School Choice application deadline for grades 6 through 12 (secondary schools) to January 30, 2009, for the 2009-10 school year.  The School Choice deadline for Kindergarten through grade 5 (elementary schools) is February 13, 2009, for fall 2009.  PSD now has an online School Choice application process (www.psdschools.org under School Registration).
