Putnam Panthers rack up 92 days of reading in during weeklong read-a-thon
Businesses, community contributions help make event a success
FORT COLLINS, CO – Putnam Elementary School of Science recording reading for 132,370 minutes over a seven-day period, in and out of school, during a read-a-thon in November. That equates to approximately 2,206 hours or 92 days reading.
The fall read-a-thon – the school’s first in many years – promoted literacy and raised funds for the school. If all pledges come in, students will have raised more than $3,000 for school programs and educational activities such as field trips, equipment, supplies, Eco Week and more. The Putnam Parent-Teacher Organization will distribute the funds by having teachers submit an application and make a presentation to the PTO about how they would use the funds for which they are asking.
The top readers in each class and grade level won prizes donated by local businesses, community members and staff. Putnam second-grader Sandra Vanatta logged 1,440 minutes – the most of any student in the school – and received the prized purple monkey and accompanying book, a certificate to a book store, a book light, popcorn and other goodies and a variety of other prizes from local businesses.
We hope the community will join Putnam’s students, staff and families in thanking the many businesses and individuals who contributed to the read-a-thon – especially the prizes – by giving them your business and telling them how grateful you are for their support of local schools. Among the contributors are:
· ColorPro Printing Inc.
· Reader’s Cove
· The Book Rack
· Book Lovers
· Fort Fun
· Books Are Fun representative Marilyn Hartig
· Super Target
· Dandelion Toys
· Downtown Ace Hardware
· Cinema Savers 6
· Putnam Book Fair
· Grandparents Program
· Richard Pearson
· Various staff members, parents and community members with big hearts but who wish to remain anonymous.
Thanks also goes to all of the parents and staff members who volunteered their time to make the read-a-thon a success, as well as to the teachers who helped their students keep track of their in-school reading. We’re looking forward to the next read-a-thon! |
