It’s amazing to me that we are already into the second quarter of this school year! I have had the opportunity to talk with a few more of you lately. I really appreciate when parents or guardians call to let me know that something is going on that may affect their child at school. It makes such a huge difference when we communicate and work together for your child!
Sometimes parents become aware of issues during parent/teacher conferences. If I can be of assistance in helping your child work through some area(s) of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me!
The lessons I have presented in classes this month continue to be about skills we need in order to be successful in school. We are working a lot on being respectful listeners, focusing on the teacher, asking good questions and believing in ourselves!
Apologizing is a skill that is difficult for many reasons. It’s hard to admit we have made a mistake or hurt someone. Sometimes what we do is accidental or may not seem like a big deal to us. For this reason, I have been talking to classes about how to apologize. I have not reached everyone yet, but I will soon! So that you can reinforce this at home, the steps I am teaching to making an apology are:
· Say the person’s name.
· Say “I’m sorry.”
· Tell the person what you are sorry for.
· Do something to fix or make up for what you have done.
Thank you for your support at home with these skills!
Kindness Club News
The students attending Kindness Club continue to help out many people at Beattie! Members helped to make posters in preparation for Mix-It-Up day which took place Tuesday, November 10th. This is a nation-wide event in which students are encouraged to socialize with people other than their regular group in order to make new friends. At Beattie we have the students sit at different tables during lunch so they are with people they may not know as well. In preparation for this day, in many classrooms we practiced how to make introductions and start a conversation. In addition, Ms. Sparks provided some wonderful music for us to enjoy during lunch!
As was mentioned in our last newsletter, we are participating in a toy drive during November. The donations we collect will go to Starlight Colorado which will give them to children who are in hospitals across Colorado during the holidays. They will take new items for children from birth to 18 yrs old. Some suggestions are toys, games, puzzles, arts & crafts, coloring and activity books, crayons & markers and books. Since we just finished our food drive, which was a huge success, we will have one collection box rather than collecting in each unit. The box will be located as you enter Beattie, across from the office. Anything families feel they could donate can be placed in that box. We will collect donations until November 24.
In addition to these activities, Kindness Club volunteers collect the recycling throughout the school. This is a great help to the teachers and the custodians!
Students are invited to come to any Kindness Club meeting. They do not need to attend each month. We meet one day during the first week of each month in the Flex Room. Students eat lunch in the cafeteria and then come in for the meeting. In December we will be working on the mitten tree and candy cane sales!
As always, if I can help you or your child in any way, please let me know!
