Battle of the Books Starts Now!Battle of the Books is a motivational reading program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Libraries (AKASL). The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to improve reading comprehension, and to promote academic excellence.
Lists of book are chosen for grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Students form teams of three or four, read the books, discuss them, and quiz each other on the contents. Each team needs to have an adult coach/sponsor who helps keep the team organized and motivated along the way. Practice questions are available for teams to use in preparation for the actual battle. A quiz show format is then used with all the teams to see which team answers the most questions correctly.
This year our Battle of the Books will be held on February 11th and 12th, but signup begins now! If your child is interested in participating, he or she will need to turn in ONE registration form with all team members listed on it, along with the coach’s name and phone number. Once the registration form is turned in teams can begin checking out Battle books. Additional information will be made available to teams and coaches to help them prepare for the competition. Each coach will receive a packet with practice questions, book lists, etc.
We will also be participating in the Poudre School District Battle of the Books with Beattie Elementary and Odea Elementary, so we are very excited about this event too!
