FCHS, India Video-Conference, Live

FCHS Asian Humanities Students Video-Conference Live with India

Students at Fort Collins High School will talk live to a guest speaker who lives in India via video conferences on Wednesday, Nov. 4 and Thursday, Nov. 5, as part of a senior-level Asian humanities class.

“I think talking live through a video conference is common in the business world, but as far as I can tell, this is the first time PSD students will be able to speak to someone who will answer their questions live from across the world,” said Elaine Holmes, social studies teacher.

Students will converse directly with Indian guest Manvendrah Singh, and ask him questions about life in India, from foods and climate to politics, religion, and arranged marriage.  Video conferences are scheduled at 8:05 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and 11:50 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5.  Conferences will also be held from 8:05 to 9:30 a.m. and 1:23 to 2:50 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 6.

Holmes met Singh when she travelled in India in July of 2009 as part of a Fulbright study tour for teachers.

“Singh was an excellent tour guide, has a master’s degree in history, and is a wonderful story teller,” Holmes said.  “I know my students will enjoy talking to him, and are especially interested to learn more about his recent marriage, which was arranged.”

Students have written out questions about things that interest them and will pose questions directly to Singh.  Singh will be able to hear and see the FCHS students ask questions about topics that interest them from arranged marriage and religion to politics and education.
