
Chess Tournaments for Kids K-9thPSD Sponsors Chess Tournament Series for Kids K-12th Grades
Poudre School District’s Scholastic Chess Association invites students in grades kindergarten-9th to participate in a series of chess tournaments which will be held on three Saturdays during the school year.
Tournament Season Kicks off at Johnson Saturday, Nov. 7
Students may play in one or all of the tournaments, which will begin from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, at Johnson Elementary School, 4101 Seneca St. Students may check in between 7:45 and 8:30 a.m., and round one begins at 9:00 a.m.
Later tournaments will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, December 5, at Traut Core Knowledge Elementary School, 2515 Timberwood Dr.; and from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, January 23, at Tavelli Elementary School, 1118 Miramont Drive.
Chess tournaments begin with a players meeting at 8:30 a.m. followed by five rounds of play which start at 9:00 a.m. Play is conducted under the Swiss system which means there is no elimination round. An awards ceremony will be held at 3:00 p.m., and trophies will be awarded to the top five players.
Chess Teaches Problems Solving, Spatial Relationships and Critical Thingking
Dedicated to creating a love of chess in students in the district, and working with school chess clubs, the association hopes to increase the awareness of the benefits of playing chess, including problem solving, spatial relationships, and critical thinking.
