Fourth Grade Reading Goal 800 Books

Colorado Eagles Emphasize Reading, Education at Bauder

Colorado Eagles players Adam Hogg and Ryan Tobler will visit Bauder Elementary to encourage students to work hard, learn to read, and stay in school until they graduate.

Fourth graders in Tiffany Miller’s homeroom class will meet the players and hear a success story about the importance of staying in school from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 15 at Bauder, 2345 W. Prospect Rd.  Miller arranged the visit to motivate students to read books and complete their accelerated reading goals.

“Our class goal is to have read 800 books by the time they come,” Miller said. “I have a group of boys who think they will get drafted out of high school to play sports, and I hope the players will tell them that everyone needs to get an education, whether or not they ever get paid to play sports.”

The Accelerated Reading program sets an individual reading goal for each student.  Based on their goal, students read books at their reading level, and take comprehension tests to see how well they understood what they read.  As Bauder students strive to reach their individual reading goals, a hockey puck will help them monitor their progress. Individual goals are based on comprehension as well as number of books read and tests completed.
