History Beattie opened in 1972 and was named after Dan Beattie, long-time community leader, distinguished athlete, and educator. Beattie was awarded the John Irwin School of Excellence Award in 2000 and 2004. In 2006 new furniture, cabinets, and countertops were added; landscaping improvements were made in 2007.
Learning culture Beattie is a Beacon School for Gifted and Talented Education. Led by the only full-time coordinator in PSD, the Lighthouse program utilizes inclusion and pull-out strategies. Teachers throughout the school use differentiated lessons to reach varying student needs.
Academic environment Beattie uses teaching teams in each grade level. Physical education, music, and art classes offer students optimal experiences to develop their creative potential. The building is fully networked with computer access in each teaching area and a 31-station computer lab.
Instructional & enrichment programs Meeting the full range of students’ academic needs, Beattie’s educational programs include Lighthouse, a special needs resource and moderate needs program, as well as Title 1 teachers, a literacy teacher, and a counselor. |
Beattie supports students’ social, emotional, and academic growth through peer mediation. We ensure a positive, safe school environment through our character education programs and through Second Step, our violence prevention program. Students enjoy enrichment classes, including multi-intelligence courses, career education, and multicultural sessions. Community involvement is a key part of our enrichment.
Beattie encourages students’ involvement in a wide array of activities including student council, Odyssey of the Mind, Geography Bee, stock market game, Science Olympiad, Word Masters, Future Problem Solvers, I-Search classes, Lego-Legos, Battle of the Books, Beattie Sunshine Singers, a running club, BASE Camp, the science fair, and honor choir.
Opportunities for parents The Beattie Action Team is our active parent group for representation in PSD and for fundraising. The School Improvement Team provides input on staffing, budget, instruction, and schedules. There are many daily and seasonal opportunities for parents to be involved.
