Week of November 9:
We have started the new curriculum adopted by the district for middle school science. Project Based Inquiry Science, or PBIS, gives students various ways to learn concepts involving earth science. This week, we will finish "The Lava Flow Challenge" where we were studying earth science and introducing students to procedural design and mothods of data analysis. We will study the rock cycle and volcanoes.
Then, it is on to "The Basketball Court Challenge" where students will problem-solve a weathering and erosion question, practice reading case studies, and brainstorm a solution for mud and dirt landing on a basketball court at the bottom of a hill. Students will have criteria and constraints to guide their problem-solving along with using procedural protocol.
We continue to start our daily science class with a "Question of the Day" which students will write down in their comp books and research for the answer at home. At the end of the week, we check to see how many questions they were able to answer correctly.
There will also be a science summary due this Friday on a current science article from a magazine, newspaper, internet, television, etc.
ELO is going smoothly. Students are involved in either a support tutorial, a study hall, or an enrichment tutorial. It has been reported that students and teachers are feeling great about how the time is being used and how all the tutorials are positively meeting the needs of the individual student.
As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to call or e-mail.
Have a great week!
