Kindergarten Curriculum
Reading
Our goals are to have children enjoy reading, to see themselves as readers, and to learn a variety of strategies for both the decoding and comprehension of books. Through shared reading (reading to the class), guided reading (reading in small groups with appropriate texts), and writing activities, we work to move children through the stages of reading development.
Writing
We encourage the children to write often and to write for a variety of purposes. There are words to copy, friends and family to write notes to, books we make and journals to write in. We also work on handwriting skills using the upper and lowercase letters. Our goal for children in kindergarten is to be able to write phonetically using beginning and ending consonant sounds, spelling some frequently used words correctly and adding vowels.
Math
The kindergarten math curriculum is integrated into other subject areas and infused into both the ongoing daily routines of the classroom and other times throughout the school day. There are 6 content strands: numeration, data & chance, geometry, operations & communication, patterns, functions, & algebra, and measurement & reference frames. While there are 18 math learning goals in kindergarten, only 5 of these goals need to be secure by the end of the year.
Social Studies & Science
Using themes, we are able to tap into the interests and knowledge of t\our kindergarteners while meeting our social studies and science standards. Popular social studies and science themes include colors & shapes, all about me, my 5 senses, bones, animals, friends, trees paper and machines.
Special Events
Kindergarten special events include adopting a tree, pumpkin walk, Native American festival, Christmas sing-along, ice skating with our book buddies, Rodeo Day, hatching chicks, Castle Day, and Field Day
