Science Fair

All Riffenburgh fifth and sixth grade students participate in a science fair in March. Fifth graders may choose to work in groups or individually. Sixth graders do independent projects. Some students in the lower grades choose to enter a project even though it is not required. Each student or group of students chooses a question that they would like to answer through scientific research. Using the scientific method the question is explored. We set up the poster displays in our media center where the students, staff and parents are invited to view the completed projects. Before the public viewing we have a pair of judges choose projects deserving of "Best of Fair," or "Honorable Mention." We have the Art teacher choose an "Artist's Choice" award and we allow the viewing public select a "Peoples' Choice" award.

The science fair fosters an understanding of the process of scientific investigation. It encourages thoroughness and it focuses many diverse skills on a single endeavor. Many of the projects are of excellent caliber. Past school winners have represented us well at the district science fair.
