First Grade
Juli Romero - I have been teaching for 15 years, and I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. I have taught at Riffenburgh for 5 years. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education. I teach because it is so rewarding to see the special "Now I get it!" look on a child's face. I teach because it is a challenging job that requires creativity, since every child is unique. I teach because I believe in life long learning for all of us, including myself! I have three children, who all attended Riffenburgh Elementary School K-6th. Therefore, I was a Riffenburgh parent with a child at this school for 17 years. I enjoy playing the piano, skiing, and eating popcorn!
Anne Johnson - I’ve been teaching for 15 years, at Riffenburgh for 13. My degree is in Elementary Education, with a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. I love the enthusiasm for learning that first graders bring to the classroom! My favorite comment by my first graders this year was, "First grade just gets better every day!" My husband and I have five children, three of whom were Riffenburgh Roadrunners. I enjoy reading, hiking and spending time with family and friends.
About our class! As we all know, it is important for every student to read for at least 20 minutes each night. First graders are growing and learning so fast and every day counts. Enjoy your chance to spend time learning together! Six and seven year olds are lured into reading by the magic of literature. They love good stories, playful language, and great pictures. No matter what program is used in the classroom, it is important to remember that the determining factor of an ability to read is your child's interest in books. You can also help by being a reading role model.
News!
We will be celebrating 100 days of first grade this coming Thursday, February 4th! Six and seven year olds are fascinated with the quantity of 100. They will participate in several activities to give them an idea of just how much 100 is. Help your student find a collection of 100 things to share with the class. First graders should bring their collection of 100 on Thursday. (Pennies, paperclips, macaroni, beans, M&M's etc.)
