About Shepardson
History
Shepardson Elementary School opened in 1978 and was named for Margaret Shepardson, a well-loved PSD teacher. Shepardson was last remodeled in 2007.
Learning culture
At Shepardson, we believe in adjusting learning activities to address individual learning needs, styles, and interests. By using various techniques to challenge students, we strive to actualize our belief that all children can learn at high levels. We hold high expectations for respectful behavior and character traits.
Academic environment
Our diverse student population naturally prepares students to be global citizens. Nearly 10% of Shepardson students are identified as having special learning challenges, and 9% qualify as English Language Learners, representing about 12 different languages. Approximately 18% of our older students qualify for Gifted Education Plans for reading and math. Our program addresses students’ diverse needs all day long.
We strive for every child to feel included. Accommodations and extensions are made in the classroom where students learn to value differences in themselves and others.
Curricular areas focus on creative and critical thinking skills while enhancing the development of the whole child. Arts, technology, and media skills are integrated into our challenging standards-based curriculum. Our staff embraces literacy and math goals.
Instructional & enrichment programs
Enrichment opportunities are offered beyond the regular school day and include science, technology, and foreign language. Extracurricular activities, such as student council, choir, Odyssey of the Mind, track club, chess club, Lego Robotics, and academic bees, enhance learning and leadership.
Opportunities for parents
Parents are integral partners in the learning process from helping at home, in the classroom, and serving on committees. Our School Improvement Team reviews test data and helps make decisions about staffing, budgeting, and instructional improvement .
