3rd Grade Author Wins

Evan B. is the first place winner for the third grade category in the 2007 Rocky Mountain PBS Young Writer’s and Illustrators contest. Evan submitted his “I Have a Dream” essay that won Grand Prize at Shepardson’s competition. This is Evan’s third year placing in the top three. To give you an idea of the magnitude of Evan’s accomplishment it will help to know that there were over 200 stories submitted from Colorado and Wyoming in the third grade category. As the first place winner, his story will be entered in the national competition. Isn’t it amazing?

I Have a Dream
By Evan

CHOP! An army of woodmen swung their axes. Many trees crashed to the ground. I glowered at the woodmen, but realized they probably did not know what they were doing.

TUG! A fisherman caught a fish, chuckled, threw the struggling fish behind him, and flicked the remainder of his cigar into the lake. I sighed.

CLATTER! A man threw a can to the ground. A car roared past, whirling exhaust into the air. Two men yelled at each other. I sighed again, and pulled down the curtain.

I plopped down on my bed, then gazed at my poster of Martin Luther King Jr. Without him, the world would be even worse. Well it isn’t too bad… but if we keep going like this… My pillow never felt so soft. With a last glimpse of my poster I drifted off.

An army of woodmen raised their axes. They paused, looked at the sky, and then dropped their axes. The axes all fell to the ground. I smiled at them and knew they knew what they were doing.

A fisherman picked up a fish, patted it, and put it back in the water. His shirt read “Don’t Smoke!”. I smiled gratefully.

A man threw a can into the recycle bin. A bike zoomed past. Two men shook hands. I smiled again and woke up. I sprung out of bed. My pillow plopped to the ground.

I dashed outside, smelling the crisp breeze. I hung up posters reading: “Let’s Make the World a Better Place – Respect Each Other and the Environment!” to inspire people, then continued to do my part.
