Student Council Update Spr '07

By Rea Kreider, Counselor and Kristen R., Student Council Secretary

The Shepardson Student Council has been very busy and we want to inform you of what we have been up to during the last few months.

Members on the School Spirit/Art Committee have been hard at work creating “Friendship Murals” that will be hung in the 3rd and 4th grade bathrooms and “Cultural Murals” that will hang in the bathrooms in the 1st and 2nd grade pod. They have also sponsored “wacky hair” and other school spirit days. The Diversity Committee had planned the MLK Diversity Assembly and Walk for mid January, but due to weather, the walk was cancelled and a Diversity Celebration Assembly was held on February 2nd. Over seventy Shepardson students wrote essays describing their dreams to make the world a better place, and winners of that contest had a chance to read their essays aloud at the assembly. Then later that month Student Council sponsored “Mix It Up At Lunch” when students enjoyed lunch with peers who they do not know that well or usually sit with. Comments from students about Mix It Up included “It was fun to hang out with other kids, but we didn’t know what to talk about” and “Thanks for making this possible. I think it was a great idea.” The Community Service Committee continues to do an outstanding job with the school’s recycling program and even introduced a plastic bag recycling system that earned the school $200! The School Store took a vacation during construction, but it’s back. Thank you Mrs. VanZyl and members of the School Store Committee for all of your dedication and patience to bring this fun activity back to Shepardson. Remember, you can always shop at home at the Online School Store. Find the link on Shepardson’s home page, buy some great stuff and 15% of purchases are profits for the school.

Student Council officers Pranaya S., Kasey D., Kristen R. and Ashlyn S. have done an outstanding job this year and aren’t done yet. Right now we are in the middle of our “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser (ends April 16th), and then before the end of the school year we will launch our collection of school supplies for our newly adopted school in New Orleans. Phew! Add the Talent Show onto that list and you can clearly see that the Shepardson Student Council is a very dedicated and active group of service-oriented young citizens.
