Description: Students from across the district compete for the chance to go to the Colorado state Spelling BEE.
Top spellers from area schools will compete in the district-wide oral spelling bee at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, at the Johannsen Support Services Center, 2407 LaPorte Avenue. The event will be televised live on PSD Channel 10 (Comcast Cable and U.S. Cable).
Competitors won their local school spelling bee and had a top score on the district written test held in January. Students through eighth grade are eligible to compete in the bee.
The Spelling Bee is conducted in rounds. Darren Marshall, secondary language arts facilitator, will pronounce spelling words. A judge will listen carefully to students as they spell each word. Participants who misspell words are eliminated in a series of rounds until a champion is declared.
The top 10 spellers will go on to compete in the Rocky Mountain News Colorado State Spelling Bee, Saturday, March 14, at the Denver Convention Center, 700 14th Street. The winner of the state bee will go on to compete in the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May, held in Washington D.C.
The district champion will be awarded a plaque and all state qualifiers will be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting. |
