Lopez Elementary School Fourth-Grade Class Wins Statewide Philanthropy Award

Before doors even open for the 2026-2027 school year, Poudre School District schools are being recognized for their dedication to the community. Lopez Elementary School’s fourth-grade class has won the Outstanding Youth Group award.

This award, given out for National Philanthropy Day through the Association of Fundraising Professionals Colorado Chapter, recognizes a youth group that has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to philanthropy and volunteerism within Colorado. Honorees serve as role models in their communities and inspire others to get involved. 

Lopez’ fourth-grade class was nominated for their annual “Hearts for Respite” luncheon. The Lopez fourth graders anchor the annual event to bring together hundreds of local community members, business leaders, and families to raise crucial funds for Respite Care — a vital Colorado organization providing short-term, quality care for children with developmental disabilities and specialized support for their families.

Students at Lopez actively lead the event’s entire execution, creating original art and promotional materials, soliciting donations from local businesses, writing invitations, designing the thematic elements, personally welcoming and hosting attendees, serving and planning the lunch, and presenting the mission of Respite Care to the audience to solicit corporate donations and individual sponsorships. 

“I am so incredibly proud of our Lopez Elementary fourth-graders, and I hope you find their exceptional commitment to philanthropy to be as remarkable as I do,” Lead Assistant Superintendent Dr. Traci Gile wrote in her letter of support. “Many students have shared that this event was the catalyst to careers and life-long dedication to service and philanthropy. They serve as profound role models in Colorado, proving that you are never too young to inspire others and make a lasting community impact. They have undeniably earned this recognition, and this award will support the continuation of their community impact and legacy of giving.”

Lopez’ fourth-grade class will receive a $3,000 award to support the continuation of their community impact with the winning of this grant. 

“This kind of work is impactful and impressive when adults in philanthropic roles do it. It is even more so when the youth in our community take charge in caring for others,” Superintendent Brian Kingsley said. “Congratulations to Lopez’ fourth-grade class for this incredible achievement. I am so proud of the work that you all are doing every year to help others and improve the lives of everyone in our community!”
