Well, Poudre School District, another school year is in the books. And may I say, what an incredible year it has been.
There are thousands of examples I could share with you to illustrate this point. Since I can’t list them all here, however, please allow me to share a handful of 2018-19 highlights.
Our high school students explored careers and earned college credit through PSD’s concurrent enrollment programs. Students got to talk with Poudre High School graduate and Astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor while she was aboard the International Space Station. Others learned to support people with disabilities and learn about inclusion. Collectively, our students also raised tens of thousands of dollars, donated literal tons of food, and gave back to help people and families throughout our community and beyond.
Our schools, staff and students were recognized for countless achievements, from the Colorado Department of Education, for their work with English language learners, by the U.S. Department of Education for being Blue Ribbon Schools, and so much more. I must also commend our staff for creating the unique conditions in which our students have phenomenal and personal student experiences.
PSD’s teams – whether athletic, musical, theatrical and more – brought home medal after medal. These included the Fossil Ridge High School cheer team’s first-ever national championship and a state championship title for the FRHS marching band. Plus, after training without snow and sans skis, PSD’s Nordic ski team had an exciting inaugural season during which several athletes competed at state.
The District started design and construction of new schools and other facilities, and $40 million in improvement projects to all existing PSD schools. We can never say thank you enough to the voters who approved a $375 million bond and $8 million mill levy override. We are so excited for the collective impact these projects will have – for today’s kids and the generations of students to come.
I end each school year with a smile on my face knowing the one that comes next will be just as amazing.
To each one of our students, I say thank you. You have inspired me with your enthusiasm for learning and willingness to push yourselves to grow and make our community – and the world – a better place.
