Three PSD elementary bell schedules shift ahead of the 2019-20 school year

As of July 18, 2019

Poudre School District is announcing updates to the 2019-2020 school year start and end times for three elementary schools: Tavelli, Bennett and Shepardson.

The schools’ 2019-20 school year bell schedules, different than previously communicated, are:

    Tavelli Elementary: 8:50 a.m.-3:28 p.m. (shifted 1 hour 5 minutes later)

•    Bennett Elementary: 8:50 a.m.-3:28 p.m. (shifted 1 hour 5 minutes later)

•    Shepardson Elementary: 8:45 a.m.-3:23 p.m. (shifted 1 hour later)

These three significant shifts come at a time when district staff continue the complex work of rolling out the new bell schedules that take effect in August. Among those elementary schools with updated bell schedule changes of roughly 10 minutes each are Harris, Putnam, O’Dea and Riffenburgh.

Other aspects of the implementation plan, however, have come together as expected.

“As wide-reaching and interconnected as it is, the implementation plan is comprehensive and forward-thinking, thanks to diligence of our incredible staff members,” PSD Superintendent Dr. Sandra Smyser said.

“That said, we are sensitive to the fact the new bell schedules will have a ripple effect not just across Poudre School District’s 1,800 square miles but also throughout our community,” Dr. Smyser said. “I’d like to thank our families, neighbors, and community partners for their continued patience and flexibility, as we adapt together to this change in the months and years ahead.”

The Board’s unanimous vote in November 2018 to change start times followed a year of extensive research and community engagement. With students’ well-being top of mind, Board Directors’ interests in later school start times stemmed from recommendations made by the American Medical Association and research on teen sleep patterns.

At that time, the Board voted to adopt a proposed set of start and end times (built with input from the community) for each PSD school. Staff throughout PSD then got to work implementing the plan, building upon a strong foundation of research.

Integral to the implementation process are members of PSD’s Transportation team, who have been mapping routes for the roughly 13,000 PSD students who ride a bus. During this work, they encountered a need to modify the three elementary school schedules by about an hour.

With these modifications, the schedules at Tavelli, Bennett and Shepardson are different than those the Board originally voted on. They are close to or the same as the schools’ start and end times during the 2018-2019 school year.

During research into bell schedule changes and in the months following the Board’s vote, staff used the best information available to them at that time. As the implementation process has progressed, updated 2019-20 enrollment data became available and revealed a need for these changes.

Until bus routes are finalized, there is a possibility of further bell schedule changes. However, it’s important to note that staff are confident that no change would be more than a few minutes.

PSD’s Transportation department sends bus route information to families in August each year. This year’s release date is Aug. 5.

Families and students who have specific questions about their school’s schedule, including extracurricular activities, athletics, and more, should contact their school directly.
