New principal selected for Blevins Middle School

PSD is pleased to announce that Melissa Wagner has been selected as the new principal at Blevins Middle School, pending approval from the Board of Education.

She comes to PSD from Colorado Springs, where she's worked as a middle school assistant principal for the last seven years. She's passionate about creating an environment for students where they feel safe, valued, and challenged to excel.

"Loving kids, working hard and having fun are the three main ingredients you need to run a middle school," she said with a smile.

Prior to becoming an assistant principal, she taught fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade, years that helped her understand the middle school mind and the transitions that preteens face.

"Middle school is about teaching the whole child," she said. "It's 50 percent academic learning and 50 percent social and emotional learning. So it's important to balance those and encourage the kids to explore and get involved so they feel like they truly belong."

She's looking forward to mentoring student leaders through Blevins' WEB student leadership program, having launched the same program in her current school, where she leads a group of students who serve as elementary school ambassadors and community advocates.

"We're excited about Melissa's experience and her passion for middle school," said Scott Nielsen, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. "We're looking forward to her joining the Blevins team."

Ms. Wagner holds a bachelor's degree from Peru State College in Elementary Education and a master's degree in Educational Administration and Policy Studies. As a first-generation college student, she's eager to provide the same kind of encouragement to students as she received from her parents and mentors.

“I want to lead by example, so that every day every student knows that somebody cares about them,” she said. "I'm honored and thrilled to join the Blevins family and contribute to the success of the school.”

Ms. Wagner will begin in the position at the start of the 2017-18 school year when current principal David Linehan retires.
