The following PSD schools are based on a dual language immersion program:
Harris Bilingual Immersion School
Harris teaches the PSD standards-driven curriculum in both English and Spanish. The school's goal is for every student to become fully bilingual and biliterate. The dual language instructional model at Harris has received state and national recognition. The school maintains a 50/50 ratio of native Spanish- and English-speaking students.
Lesher IB World Middle School
Lesher offers a two-way continuation of the immersion program for 6th-grade students from Harris Bilingual. Language arts, math, science, and social studies is taught 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. All courses are also taught using the aims, objectives, assessment criteria, and areas of interaction of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. A Spanish language arts program is available for 7th- and 8th-grade students in the program.
Irish Elementary's program includes a 50/50 group of native English/Spanish speakers. The program's goal is to have students leave Irish bilingual, biliterate, and bi-cultural. Language of instruction for math, science, social studies, and social skills alternates between Spanish and English each week. Research has shown that English language learners who participated in dual language education outperformed comparable monolingually schooled students in academic achievement after four to seven years in the program.
