PSD Threat Assessment Process

The Safe School Initiative began in 1999 to help prevent targeted school violence. The Safe School Initiative promotes actions that educators, law enforcement and other community members can use to respond to the problem of targeted school violence.

PSD, in collaboration with community resources has a threat assessment process that includes:

  • Using the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines, the team members investigate reported threats and determine if the threats can be resolved, or if a team needs complete a full behavioral threat assessment.
  • There is always an emphasis on helping students resolve conflict and create response plans, which include targeted intervention, supervision and safety checks, to mitigate the risk of targeted violence.

The Process Includes:

  • Assessments, interviews, inquiries (including open sources information on social media)
  • Immediate action to be taken when a threat is reported
  • Intervention and supervision, as well as supportive measures that can be put into place for all involved.
