Students at all Poudre School District schools now checkout in the cafeteria with a quick tap of their finger using biometric technology. Families can opt out of using this system at any time, see below for more information.
PSD participates in Colorado's Healthy School Meals for All program which allows most PSD students to enjoy free breakfast and lunch, regardless of their household income. As more students are enjoying free meals, and given the limited meal time schedules, we are using technology to streamline the checkout process.
Why Do Students Need to Checkout if the Meals are Free?
- Cafeteria staff must verify the following:
- Meals meet federal nutrition standards and guidelines
- Meals are counted for state and federal funding
- Student allergy information is reviewed as needed
Fast Facts About the Biometric System
- identiMetrics scanners are integrated with PSD’s Point of Sale (POS) system.
- It takes about 2 seconds to scan a finger.
- This is a finger scan. This technology DOES NOT take or store fingerprints.
- The computer software develops a grid of intersection points from the swirls and arcs of the scanned finger, creates a template showing the finger’s unique points, and converts the template into a binary number that is encrypted and stored.
- PSD does NOT have the ability or desire to store or recreate fingerprints for any reason.
- The system is more secure, accurate and faster than using PIN numbers.
