Returning Families FAQ

Do I need to re-register my child every year?

No, if your student is currently enrolled at a PSD school, they will be re-enrolled each year at that school.

Do I need to register my child when they’re moving up a level (from Pre-K to kindergarten, elementary to middle, middle to high, etc.)?

  • For Pre-K to kindergarten, yes – all parents/guardians wishing to enroll their child in kindergarten in PSD will have to complete the kindergarten registration process, even if their child is currently enrolled in a PSD Pre-K program.
  • For elementary students transitioning to middle school and for transitions from middle to high (if attending designated neighborhood schools), registration is not needed. Fifth grade students are pre-registered at their neighborhood feeder middle school in February. Eighth grade students are pre-registered at their neighborhood feeder high school.
  • Fifth grade and eighth grade students wishing to attend a middle or high school that isn’t their designated neighborhood school must submit a School Choice application. This is true even when it comes to continuing with a program (going from a Core Knowledge elementary school to a Core Knowledge middle school, etc.) – the family must still submit a School Choice application, and they will receive a higher-priority ranking for program continuation.

How does PSD ease the transition from elementary to middle school, middle to high school, etc.?

  • PSD has special orientation days called Transition Days to help students new to middle or high school transition into their new school and routine.
  • Fifth graders will be contacted by their middle school in the spring of their fifth grade year. Then, as incoming sixth graders, they’ll attend a special orientation at the start of the school year. Schools also have programs that pair sixth graders with an upperclassman "buddy" to help them learn the ropes during the transition.
  • High schools have special orientations for incoming ninth graders with upper class mentors available to guide new students. Please contact individual schools for details about the programs.

How do I update my contact information or emergency contacts?

Synergy can be updated throughout the summer, but during the school year, you have to contact the school to update these details.

What should I do if I want to switch schools within PSD?

  • A School Choice application must be submitted for each student who wishes to attend a school that is not their designated neighborhood school. This includes siblings.
  • Students who wish to change schools or return to their designated neighborhood school after the school year has started must follow the School Choice application process.
  • Students who wish to return to their designated neighborhood school for the following school year (not during the middle of the year) do not need to submit a School of Choice application, and can contact their neighborhood school to re-enroll.
  • If applying to one of PSD’s alternative high schools (Centennial High School or Poudre Community Academy), these have separate applications that can be obtained by contacting the school.
