At what grade level can my student begin participating in athletics or extracurriculars?
Students can begin taking part in school-sponsored athletics starting in sixth grade, though only some sports will be open to this youngest group. This includes cross country, golf, tennis, wrestling and track and field. For all other sports for students in and under sixth grade, programming is offered through Fort Collins Recreation.
How do I register my student for sports, clubs, or other activities?
Students can register for activities through their school. For sports, they can also be registered online through the PSD athletics website.
What forms or requirements are needed to participate (e.g., physical exams, permission slips, fees)?
- Middle school students must fill out a registration form as well as a medical physical form to participate in PSD athletics. More information on participating in middle school athletics, as well as necessary forms, can be found here.

The health and safety of student athletes is of the utmost importance to everyone involved. The district and individual athletic programs provide a variety of protocols and equipment to ensure student safety, including:
- Coaches being trained in CPR, the use of AEDs and first aid, and identifying concussions
- Active heat monitoring
- A lightning detection system on all coaches’ phones
- Active air quality monitoring
- Athletic trainers for high school students
- Medical kits for every middle school program
- Portable AED units at every school
- Emergency action plans on file at every school
- Medical personnel on site at every football game
Are transportation options available for practices, competitions, or activity events?

What happens if a student transfers schools — can they still participate right away?
For middle school athletics and activities and high school activities, students can participate right away. However, high school students participating in athletics will need to fill out Colorado High School Activities Association transfer forms online with the support of the receiving school’s athletic director to determine the level of athletic eligibility.
