Visual Art in PSD
Poudre School District's K-12 Visual Art programs are essential for fostering creativity, self-expression, and crucial visual literacy skills that prepare students for a rapidly evolving world. These programs celebrate artistic exploration, equipping students with innovative thinking strategies, critical problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in an increasingly visual global landscape.
Elementary Art
Elementary Visual Art programs in PSD foster creativity and self-expression to support student learning, bolster visual literacy skills, and promote artistic expression.
Elementary Art Curricular Resources:
- Davis Publications: Davis provides education resources that support Art educators, inspire and engage students, create deep connections, elevate the importance of creativity, develop a culture of meaning and purpose, and support quality art education.
- Choice-Based Art in PSD: Choice-based art education, including Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB), is a teaching philosophy that centers the student as the autonomous artmaker. The art studio provides space for students to practice, play, explore, create, and express personal meaning. The emphasis is on the creative process and student agency as young artists build skills, ideas, and connections.
Secondary Art
Middle school and high school Visual Art programs in PSD offer students a space to explore their artistic potential, develop crucial visual literacy skills, and learn innovative thinking strategies vital for navigating an increasingly visual world. These programs support students' personal development and lay the foundation for academic and career success beyond high school.
Concurrent Enrollment in PSD: Visual Art concurrent enrollment courses provide an additional avenue for students to advance their artistic development and gain a head start on their college education.

Creative Endeavors
- Artwork from all grade levels will be exhibited December 4-January 26 at Foothills Mall, 215 E. Foothills Parkway, Fort Collins
- Opening Reception: 5-7 p.m., Thursday, December 4th
SuperArt!
- This exhibit is located in the JSSC lobby and boardroom, 2407 Laporte Avenue, Fort Collins
- Student recognition and receptions: Wednesday, April 8th and Thursday, April 9th
Youth Art Month
- Artwork from all grade levels will be on display at the Center for Creativity, 200 Mathews St, Fort Collins
- Opening Reception: 5-7 p.m., March 11th, 12th & 13th
Why Art Matters
The Studio Habits of Mind
The Studio Habits framework, developed by Harvard University's Project Zero, provides a valuable lens through which to understand and cultivate artistic thinking and practice. These habits encourage a more intentional and thoughtful approach to creative work. By actively fostering these habits, individuals develop not only a deeper understanding of artistic processes and techniques but also cultivate essential cognitive skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and metacognition that extend far beyond the Art studio.
